It is highly possible that it is being treated as defunct. Most likely it will be reinstated and rechristened under a new name in the near future.

This website will cease to exist shortly. The NYCDPHH Facebook page will be revamped.

We know it's not fair for you guys and we can't apologize enough but don't let this affects your social life.

We strongly encourage you and your friends to establish a NEW social gathering for Deaf and Hard of Hearing people and their supporters. It's fairly easy - all you have to do is pick a bar and date/time, then post an announcement in DeafNYC.com and/or Facebook. Photographers NEEDED!

Folks,

Zavier and I are in dire need of volunteer photographers. We do not have any photos for February's DPHH because we don't have enough volunteers.

So what do we look for in our photographers????

The ability to take a wide variety of photos of our attendees from all walks of life, ages, backgrounds etc etc.

This means being willing to go up to perfect strangers and asking to take their photos for the website. It isn't hard, all you have to do is go up and say, "Hi, I am a photographer for NYC DPHH and with your permission I would like to take some photos." and that's all. If the people who's photos are being taken ask if their photos will deAfinitely be used, you will have to explain it depends on the quality and quanity of photos received and that it is up to the administrators of this website to decide. We generally try to use photos that show diversity and new faces of our NYC DPHH crowds.

If you are interested in volunteering for NYC DPHH please email us at nycdphh@gmail.com, include your name, availability (how often do you attend DPHH) and a few sample photos. We are seeking dedicated volunteers!

Next DPHH will be on Friday March 12, 2010 at Stout Bar! We decided on March 12, 2010 so that students who are on spring break from Gallaudet University can join us!

Dress Code Addendum

Hiya Folks

We received several emails concerning NYC DPHH dress code request. 1st of all it is NOT mandatory, we only strongly encourage our attendees to dress nicely. As for Jeans, wearing jeans is acceptable in most places nowaday, as long as they're not dirty, stained, ripped and/or"gaudy". This means nice jeans with dress shoes and a top is fine :)

We still say no to sneakers and baseball caps unless it's a dive bar and we will specify if it is. Otherwise we really want to see you in your best threads! Afterall, we take photos to post on this site and NYC is still one of the fashion capitals in the world!

Lastly we also want to stress that rowdy behavior is unacceptable at all times. Let's put our best foot forward and start the new year right!

The next DPHH will be at Soldier McGee Tavern.

Soldier McGee Tavern is the IT spot for New York City bar happenings. Local sports fans know their way to this Upper Westside sports bar for the thrilling energy found underneath its roof. Bartenders know regulars by name and new comers are never disappointed.

Dear Folks

Zavier and I are still mulling over which location for next Saturday's NYC DPHH on February 6th! Location will be announced by Sunday (1/31/10).

On a separate note, Zavier and I would like to remind our attendees that this is Deaf Professional Happy Hour. Emphasis is on PROFESSIONAL! This means we encourage our members to "dress to impress" when coming to DPHH. Jeans and sneakers should be left at home and other street wear.

We also recommend bringing business cards to hand out to others and promote networking and job opportunities. We aren't saying not to have fun, but lately we've noticed things have turned into more of a frat party than a professional gathering.

We strive to represent the very best of the best. NYC is the greatest city on earth and we want NYC DPHH to reflect nothing less than the finest! So please do encourage all signers of all ages to come (provided they are over 21). Our goal is not to alienate anyone but to take a good thing and make it even better but we need your help! Let's show the world why NY is #1!

Well folks
Zavier and I realize the month of December is a #BUSY time for everyone!!! Many events every weekend all over the city. So we decided to host one last DPHH hurrah for 2009 on Wednesday November 25th! Unfortunately I (Jennifer) will not be able to attend as I will be out of town with my family the night before Thanksgiving. But rest assured my co-host Zavier is roaring to go and have a great time with everyone!

Underage drinking

Dear folks,

It has been brought to my attention that a few attendees from the recent DPHH (October) were underage and using fake photo IDs. This is troublesome because not only can the underage person who attends get in trouble such as losing their driver's license and facing a fine, the bar/establishment could lose their liquior licenses.

It is not NYC DPHH responsibility to "police" our attendees who are underage and chose to break the law. We can only strongly encourage you to inform your underage friends that the bars/clubs used by DPHH are for people over 21 years old. That they should wait till they reach legal age (21).

If someone you don't know comes up to you at a DPHH asking you to buy them a drink, you have every right to say NO. Again this is for your protection because if you are caught buying someone who is underage an alcoholic beverage, you could be arrested as well.
If you see someone who is underage at any DPHH events, please notify the bouncer, bar manager, waitstaff etc etc.. For more information, please read Governor Patterson's brochure on alcohol & the law.

Zavier and I are pleased how much NYC DPHH gatherings has grown these past few months. We would like to see NYC DPHH continue to grow as a community and maintain good ties with the various bar establishments all over the city. So please let your underage friends know that while we wish they could attend, if they are under 21 years old, to please wait till they are of age (21).

Zavier and I (General Jen) are pleased to annouce September's DPHH will take place for the very first time at The Six Ward!

The Sixth Ward, also known as the Whiskey Ward, for the abundance of saloons it held, was located in Lower Manhattan. Due to the poverty and squalor of the tenements in which the people lived, the saloon became the focal point of social activity for 19th century New Yorkers. The saloon keepers of the Sixth Ward were predominately Irish, and many enjoyed great prominence within their communities.

I want to clarify a few things from your comment. Both Steve and Ashraf are VOLUNTEER photographers, as all of us who host/photograph/and run the website.

2ndly Steve doesnt decide which photos are chosen for the website, I do (Jennifer) so if you have an issue with the photographs used you need to speak to me directly.

3rdly there were over 50 photos that I waded through and chose the ones I felt were the best of the best. Perhaps the particular photo you were in wasnt sharp enough or too dark or whatever but your hostility and unnecessary attack on Steve is unacceptable.

Frankly, I am appalled to find such a comment left by any one of our attendees. Again I must stress this is a VOLUNTEER gig that none of us are paid and we do so out of the goodness of our hearts. And to advocate what a great and diverse Deaf community we have here in NYC.

I will not be in attendance for August's DPHH due to my plans out of town but come Sept, feel free to see me directly to discuss your grievences further.

Hey folks,
Zavier and I were informed about the upcoming RID conference and we realize many people will be out of town on August 1st. We would like to move DPHH to Saturday August 8th!!!
Same place, time etc etc.
So remember the new date for August DPHH will be Saturday the 8th at Chelsea Brewery.
Time: 7pm-???? (approx 1-2am, depending on the crowd size, the bar will remain open as late as 2am)

Well folks,

We're gonna try something new. Zavier and I agreed to start alternating between Fridays & Saturdays monthly. So for our 1st Saturday DPHH we have chosen *drum roll...*

Chelsea Brewing Company

The Chelsea Brewing Company's brewery is Manhattan's largest microbrewery. The brewery consists of a copper and brass 30 barrel brewhouse, six 60 barrel uni-tanks, four 30 barrel uni-tanks, two 60 barrel bright beer tanks and six 15 barrel servers which are located behind the bar in the restaurant. The brewery features a fully automatic grain handling system, 46,000lb. grain silos, automated bottling system capable of handling 2000 bottles per hour and a kegging system.Chelsea Brewing Company will be able to bottle 100,000 cases for off-site consumption annually.The 12,000 square foot off-site storage and distribution facility will enable Chelsea Brewing to distribute beer throughout the Chelsea complex and the tri-state area.

Jewish Deaf Professional Happy Hour

Please take a moment to welcome a new addition to NYC DPHH scene called Jewish Deaf Professional Happy Hour (JDPHH). So what is JDPHH all about? Read below;

JDPHH- Jewish Deaf Professional Happy Hour is for people that cannot come to NYC DPHH Events because it's usually on Friday evenings and that night our Holy Shabbath. So we created JDPHH for people who can come on Sunday evenings instead of Friday nights.

We thought Wine and Cheese is a nice way to get together with other Jewish Deaf and Hard of Hearing people your age. Married and singles Jews are welcome. There will be light refreshments available, plus plenty of games and socializing. Dinner can be ordered. $15.00 cover. It's Glatt Kosher under supervison of OU.

Thanks to everyone who braved out the rain and came out for June's DPHH! It was a packed house! And I want to take a moment to thank Andrew Washington for volunteering to help take photos along with me ("General Jen") and Zavier.

So you may be wondering? Who are the official hosts of DPHH now? Why its me (Jennifer Perlis) and Zavier Sabio!!! Welcome aboard Zavier! As you can see in the photos above, Zavier is deAfinitely a social butterfly. In addition to our NYC DPHH team, we have several volunteer photographers, Ashraf ul Hossain, his work can be viewed here; and Steve Martinez, his work can be viewed here; and when they can't make it, Zavier & I will snap the dphh photos :-)

Also this Fall, Zavier and I plan to experiment with hosting DPHH on Saturdays as well as Fridays. We hope to post the Fall line up in late August so you can plan accordingly for the upcoming Fall/Winter holidays.

Hi Folks

I tried to set up a poll recently to ask you all to vote which nights DPHH should be on? Unfortunately the poll itself was defective and I am trying again with a different poll software.

So what we need from you is your pick on which night NYC DPHH should take place? Fridays only? Saturdays only? Or alternate every month?

The reason why I advocate alternating between nights is because some of our attendees are Jewish and would like to attend NYC DPHH but are unable to do so because of Sabbath (which occurs every Friday at sundown till Saturday at sundown). In addition several of you emailed me and explained you work Monday-Friday NIGHTS so by the time they finish their shift, it is too late to attend NYC DPHH.

So let's try again, pls vote. Thank you :-)

Kevin has resigned as NYC DPHH Host due to other commitments. He will be missed!

As of now, me (Jenny- the crazy chicka who runs around taking photos for this website) is in charge. Some call me General Jen, or you can call me Jenny.

I am seeking 2 new Hosts or Hostesses for the remainder of 2009 NYC DPHH lineup. Responsibilities include;
-To be the "face" of NYC DPHH
-To meet and greet attendees
-To work with the waitstaff/bartenders if any problem arises
-To be aware of the space and if deafies are blocking walk ways or doorways or impending the path for the waitstaff, to ask deafies to please MOVE out of the way.

I am also seeking a Liaison Person to be the coordinator
Responsibilities include;
-Choosing bars and locations for upcoming DPHH
-Contacting these locations to check if they are still in business? can accommodate a lot of deafies? etc., etc.

Lastly, I would like a team of photographers for a total of 3 photographers including myself for NYC DPHHs.
Responsibilities include;
-taking photos at DPHH events
-making notes of the people in the photos (if they are from out of town or the country? or other interesting facts)
-have your own digital camera and can send me edited photos after the events (credits will be giving accordingly to the photos)

The reason why I would like 2 Hosts/Hostesses and 3 photographers is we all have a life outside of DPHH and sometimes conflicts arises and we cannot attend. Its better to have several of us working together to ensure future success of NYC DPHH.

NYC DPHH is in danger. We are disappointed to say this, because we tried to do a good thing, but some people ruined it for us. We tried to show that he Deaf Community is a STRONG community of Wonderful people, who should not be judged based on being deaf. Our intention was to showcase that Deaf people are brilliant, creative, professional, witty, and capable of having a great time!

People went to bars, ate, drank, and did not tip the staff. The servers get paid minimum, and rely on tips to make a living. They worked so hard, tried their best to communicate, even with language barriers. Some of us sat at tables for hours without ordering anything, so the tables could not be used for other customers. The going rate for tipping is at LEAST 15% of the total check. Some people tipped the servers 0 cents! It is embarrassing to the rest of us in the group who know the proper etiquette about tipping servers, and it gave us ALL a bad name.

As the organizers of this group, we are also put in the position of being responsible for the behavior of the attendees. It looks bad on ALL of us! Those who did it know who they are, we will not mention names. We don't care what you do in the privacy of your home, but we do not like that you put us at risk of them thinking ALL Deaf people behave that way in public.

DPHH means DEAF PROFESSIONAL HAPPY HOUR. It means those who can come together to network, have a good time, and respect each other's professions and careers, being supportive of each other. A high level of of respect and mature behavior is expected.

If you cannot conduct yourself in a professional manner, please do not attend the events. If you don't drink, please do not attend the server. If you are not willing to support the venue, and tip the servers, please do not attend the events.

We put OUR names and reputation on the line by planning and hosting these events, and we intend to maintain a good reputation for the Deaf Community, and with the Venues that we ask to host our large group. WE have to deal with the problem when people do not act as they should.

Please, Please, do not disappoint us, and the Deaf Community. Let us show the Hearing Community that we are capable of decent and mature behavior, and that we know good etiquette, and what is the appropriate tip for servers. Let us show that DPHH is a prestigious group of intellectuals who come together to promote and support each other who work HARD in the Deaf Community, and just need a time and place to unwind, and have a good time.

Hi all,

The end of 2008 is fast approaching and I thought it'd be a terrific time to keep you informed of what's in store for 2009.

Instead of posting the event announcement each month, I will post the entire 12-months schedule of dates and places for future DPHHs. It shall be convenient for deaf professionals who wish to plan accordingly way in advance. It will most likely be shown on the right column of this site.

Due to my hectic work and lifestyle schedules, I regret to inform you that I may have to step down as the host after December 2009.

It's below street level and bit smallish, but the atmosphere is fantastic. A friend of mine introduced it to me a while ago and it's great. Happy Hour is 4p-7p with $5 beer AND FREE PIZZA. Very crisp and tasty, that. It's located on the north side of 14th street between 1st and 2nd avenue. Closest trains are L at 1st and 3rd avenue, and N R W 4 5 6 and L at Union Square.

I'll be there after 7p due to a prior commitment. See you then!!

Hello! Happy Holidays!

It was a tough pick, I was oscillating between the Asian Pub in the East Village (it's trippy eating Asian food with Sake and beer) and Perdition in Hell's Kitchen. I decided on Perdition, because Asian Pub is more of dining and the bar is something, like, 5 feet long. And there's loads of construction around the Pub near the Bowery and it's not fun to walk around at night especially on Cooper Square's awkward angles. Will try the Asian Pub once things quiet down.

Anyways, I've been to the Perdition several times, had my birthday there. It's great.

A new bar recently opened near where I work and one of the DPHH regulars read my mind and suggested the same place for November. Yayness!

take the F/V train to Lower East Side/2nd Avenue. When you get out of the train, proceed to 1st Avenue/Allen street exit of the platform. Do exit out the Allen Street side NOT First Avenue. Go down approximately two blocks (past Stanton street) and lo and behold.. Marshall Stack is at the very end of the 2 block hike.

or, take J/M/Z train to Bowery. when you exit, walk due east on Delancey street to Allen Street (pass Chrystie and Forsyth) and make a left. Walk one block to Rivington.
